Today, I had a possibly serious engine meltdown. My first real engine issue since purchasing the bike 1.5 years ago. And it was probably due to slightly not enough oil. We’ll see.

As I started off for work this morning, the bike was not running very smooth at low speeds. As I approached the traffic light, the engine began making a loud sound that was similar to gears going the opposite direction! I quickly turned off the engine and came to a stop. I then tried to move the crank shaft by pressing down the kick-start. It wouldn’t move!!! Argh! So, it is a possible engine sezure. One of the pistons could be welded to the jugs (the best scenario), or worse, the crank shaft could be totally shot.

I will keep you posted!

I have uploaded the photos from my weekend trip to Inner Mongolia to flickr. My friends and I took a long weekend to to go to Inner Mongolia in Northern China. We saw the Genghis Khan’s Mausoleum, the Resonant Sand Gorge, and the Wudang Monastery.

See the pictures on flickr by clicking on the photo to the right or go to my “photos” section of this site. There you can start from the first photo and read about the trip as you flip through the photos.

Just so we are all clear - Inner Mongolia is China. Outer Mongolia is Mongolia.

Everyone puts “Currently Reading” pictures/links on their websites, but since I don’t read, I decided to put a “Currently Watching” section. And why stop there?! I also added a “Previously Watched” section too. No real reason for this.. just something else to put on the site… The cover shots link directly to Amazon. The formatting, as of this writing, is crap, so I will be working on that later.

Hint: If you don’t have any idea what I am talking about, look at my sidebar down the page…

Apple decided to (finally) eliminate the distinction between the [iPod](http://web.archive.org/web/20041130040940/http://www.apple.com/ipod//) and the [iPod photo](http://web.archive.org/web/20041130085903/http://www.apple.com/ipodphoto/). Now, there is only an [iPod](http://www.apple.com/ipod/) - all color screens, and with the photo capabilities that no one really uses. They did something slightly odd, though - they again discontinued a configuration (the 30gig) in favor for the cheaper 20gig model - that makes both the 20gig and 40goig (which I have) models old and worth money on Ebay (I wish). And just a $100 difference in price! Kind of wish I waited till now to buy the $399 60gig model (gee, I think I paid $499 for the 40gig model way back in January!!).

Apple has released iTunes 4.9 - the main new feature is [podcasting](http://www.apple.com/podcasting/). I will have to test it to see if it is better than the podcasting support in [NetNewsWire](http://ranchero.com/netnewswire/). I need to spend quality time tonight with my computer as I was out of town and out of touch for the last few days.

Ever have problems with your web hosting ISP? I am having one now with one of the hosting accounts I manage (not this website).

Way back when, in 2004, things were fine. I had FTP and Telnet access. Then, sometime late 2004 or early 2005 they decided to turn off Telnet and allow their Telnet-customers use SSH - a good movie in security terms. However, my account could not connect. So, back in April of 2004 (the 15th to be exact), I sent this email (via ther website support ticketing thingy) (note, names have been replaced with public-friendly names…):

Client Name: Chris Drumgoole
Email address: chris.drumgoole@domain.com

Username: username
Domain Name: domain.com
Account Platform: Sun Solaris
Account Type: Other

Subject: SSH Access - URGENT

I need to have SSH access to unzip a file i am uploading for our website.
You guys took away our telnet access without giving us SSH. Not cool.

I get a prompt reply the next day:

Hi;

Well, telnet and SSH are actually the same thing from a technical point of view. The only thing I did was turn off the telnet server so that telnet connections are no longer accepted. If you were able to log in using telnet, you can log in using SSH. There is no reason that you would not be able to log in using SSH. In order to help you, I’ll have to know more about the problem you are having.

Alana

First of all, Alana, you’re an idiot. You might want to read what Telnet and SSH are before suggesting they are the same thing from a technical point of view. Careful with your words, Alana - not everyone is tech-novice.

Any way….. So, about a month later when I have a chance to test it, it didn’t work. Big surprise. I send an email back to support:

Support:

Does it look like SSH works? See below. I don’t think so. Telnet used to work. We need SSH turned on. I used the same password for SSH and FTP. It doesn’t work.

And guess what? No response. Come June 23, yesterday, I send them a nice little email, cc’ing their billing and sales departments, as I can’t find any other email addresses or phone numbers on their website:

Host:

No one responded to this email.

I expect to have a response today!

What is the telephone number of technical support? Your managers?

Someone is not doing their job.

And of course, I get a prompt reply from the billing department:

Hi,

I have contacted our technical manager about this. It will be fixed ASAP.

You can reach us at 1-888-555-1212.

Thank you.

I come into work this morning, no other emails. I try SSH, nope, doesn’t work. I reply with this (again, CCing everyone):

Nope… Not yet…. And, no email from tech support…

monitor [~] [1]> ssh username@www.domain.com
username@www.domain.com’s password:
Received disconnect from 207.228.xxx.xxx: 12: Authentication method disabled.
monitor [~] [2]>

Note: I am using the exact same password I use for ftp, which works fine.

We’ll see if they ever respond to me. I am seriously considering dumping them…

This weekend I am going on a trip to [Baotou](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baotou), [site 2](http://www.baotou.gov.cn/English/), the largest city in the Autonomous Region [Inner Mongolia](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inner_Mongolia), China. (FYI, an Autonomous Region is similar to a Province, but not). Melanie, Kostas, and Lilian will join also.

I am not sure what all we will be doing, but I am sure it will be fun.

As you have probably guessed, I have modified the photo gallery section. First, it started as php Gallery. When I decided to redo the site, I purchased a Pro account over at www.flickr.com and started uploading. Originally, I just linked to my flickr site. Then my colleague found a nice WordPress plug-in that utilizes flickr’s API. So now, the flickr photo sets appear in my site as albums. Pretty neat. (O.k., I thought it was neat) As always, I welcome comments.
